Videos

So it’s been awhile since I last posted a video.  It’s not that we haven’t been taking videos…it’s just that we haven’t been downloading the movies from our camera, editing them or uploading them.  It takes a little bit of work…but it’s pretty ridiculous how behind we are.  So here come the videos…in chronological order…enjoy.

Pictures

Other then our crazy shopping run for Maria’s birthday…which was probably the best time I’ve EVER had shopping in my life…not too much to report.

Had a couple pictures to share…thought they were cute.  The first of Maria looking very old & mature in her Rave Green, celebrating the Sounder’s victory today.  The second…well…she had some fun in her “princess diaper” by trying on Mom’s shoes.  Hilarious.  Happy Saturday!

Hoppy Easter

Happy Easter to everyone!  After a wonderful family vacation, it was great to have a day to relax and hang out with family before going to work.  To celebrate Easter, we went to church with my dad and sister…and then after nap, we went to my parents house for Easter dinner.

Due to the questionable weather, my Mom and Kristine decided to set up an Easter egg hunt for Maria in my parent’s basement instead of in the yard.  Maria wasn’t really sure what to do…but once she got applause for finding her first egg, she quickly got the hang of it.  Every time she found one, she’d hoist it up as if to show it off to everyone.  She was also VERY happy to find out that many of them had chocolate in them…her FAVORITE.  The problem was that after the hunt, she was trying to grab any egg shaped item she saw…and at Easter, some of the egg shaped items are not very “Maria-Proof”.

A few pictures from the hunt…

Home!

We’re back home, preparing for the work week.  While none of us are looking forward to our respective schools or places of work tomorrow, it’s nice to be home.  ESPECIALLY considering San Diego had the pleasure of enjoying a 7.2 magnitude earthquake 180 miles(ish) Southeast of town.  Crazy!

Somewhat of a hectic departure from San Diego…we got up a bit late on Saturday, around 7:30.  We thought we were OK because we had packed the night before and pretty much had to shower, grab breakfast and head out.  Of course it took longer then expected and we were on the road by 8:45….no problem, just had to drop off the car, get to the airport and check in for our 10:30 flight…we’d be fine!  Get to the car rental place…car checked in, great.  “Which Airline?” we were asked…”American” we answered as that is what our itinerary said.  “Great, that’s Terminal 2, we’ll get you there in 10 minutes.”  The driver drops us off…and even helps us unload our large haul of gear…9:20…cutting it close, but we’ll be OK.  We get our stuff assembled, cross the street to the terminal, ride the elevator up (we’re not lazy, we had a lot of stuff and our Bob Stroller with us)…and we’re greeted by a sign welcoming us to the American Airlines ticket counter…unless you’re flying to Seattle…because those flights are run by Alaska…out of Terminal 1.  Crap.  Back downstairs…to learn that you can’t just walk there…you have to catch a shuttle.  The Shuttle comes…we hope on…we get to the first stop, drop a guy off and wait…and wait.  KILLING US.  Finally we took off and got to Terminal 1…unloaded our gear, got situated again…and rushed to the ticket counter.  Checked in, realized that we hadn’t told the airline that we had a lap infant…and we were assigned to the rows in front of the exit row, which for some reason can’t have lap infants.  No problem they tell us, just tell the gate agent and they’ll get it straightened out.  It’s now 10:00 (yes our flight was to depart at 10:30)…and there is an ENORMOUS line at security…double CRAP!  We stood in line…and started to realize that we weren’t going to make it.  Then, out of nowhere, a security lady walks by, sees us with our large Bob stroller and asks us to come with her…she takes us to the very front of the line and lets us in the wheelchair assistance door which makes us next in line.  Just as we get our shoes off, we hear our name getting butchered over the loud speaker.  (You’d think that in San Diego, they might be able to say “dos Remedios”…not so much.)  Sarah takes off running with Maria to figure out the seat assignments and I stay behind to collect our stuff.  Of course I get pulled over to have our strolled swabbed for explosives…ugh.  I pack everything up thinking that I’m in for a nice long sprint…gate 17…that sounds like a good quarter mile away.  I pack up the bags and strolled and run up the escalator…THANKFULLY gate 17 was the first gate on my left…Sarah was at the counter getting everything squared away.  With tickets in hand, we walk to the gate agent…OH NO…they had assigned us Exit row seats as they still didn’t have Maria added as a lap infant.  The lady from the counter was very apologetic and just said, “Come with me!”…she marched us onto the plane and started directing people to move around to open up a couple non-exit, non-row in front of the exit seats for us.  Yes we made the plane…no we didn’t get the entire row to ourselves…but we didn’t care, just happy to be on the plane.  Ended up sharing a row with a very nice, petite, mother of three (7, 4 and 2)…Sarah and I talked about it, she was pretty much the best case scenario of a person to share a row with a lap infant.

Made it home no problem from there…got a wonderful report from our dog sitter, Sara, that THE Lucy had been perfect…no messes in the house…just a lot of snuggling.  Our puppy is FINALLY figuring things out…what a good doggie!  While we had a wonderful vacation…we were so happy to be back home and to see our doggie.

SeaWorld

What would a trip to San Diego be without a trip to SeaWorld…especially with how much Maria loves animals.  Today was supposed to be rainy…that’s what we heard all week.  When we woke up, we saw that it had rained overnight…and it was still sprinkling.  We figured we’d still do SeaWorld and try our best to stay dry.  Maybe the weather would keep the crowds smaller.  Well…we got there and it did rain on us as we entered…but that’s about it.  The sky cleared and we enjoyed some of the best weather of our trip.

We arrived at the park a little after 9:00.  The facility was just opening so we kept ourselves entertained while waiting for the Sesame Street Bay of Play to open at 10:00…and the Shamu show at 11:00.  The dolphins put on a good show for us.  They were a bit surly since they hadn’t been fed yet.  They would come up to the glass and get all cute and friendly…and then whip around and try to splash you.  Funny…unless you’re holding $4000 in camera equipment that doesn’t react well to salt water baths.  Thankfully, I was able to keep my camera dry…I wasn’t as lucky, oh well.  We also checked out the Rays exhibit, posed for the cheesy Shamu picture (below) and visited the touch tank.

At 10:00 we hurried over to the Sesame Street Bay of Play area which had a large play area and a few themed rides.  It was great because the park was still pretty empty…and there were barely any people on the rides.  Maria and I enjoyed the flying Elmo fish ride…she’s so tiny that she could barely see over the edge so I’m not sure how much she enjoyed herself…at least she wasn’t scared.  Then Sarah sucked it up and did the Abby themed tea-cup ride with Maria.  Poor momma had an upset stomach afterward…no more rides for her.  (I filmed them on the ride…that’ll be posted later.)

Our next stop was the Shamu Show, “Believe”…we wanted to go get good seats that wouldn’t get us wet.  We ended up in the front row just behind the “Soak Zone”, perfect.  Maria was amazed by the show…she did her best to participate with the hand motions and squealed every time a whale jumped out of the water.  I was surprised by what the whales were able to do…I don’t remember them being able to do flips…WOW!  Watching the whales makes me ponder…while it’s sad that these animals are in captivity, how many people fall in love with Orca whales because of this experience and support their protection in the wild because of the opportunity to connect with them in an environment like this…hmmm.

After the Shamu show we had some lunch, visited the Shark exhibit and headed back for one last visit to the Bay of Play…thank goodness that we did because we were able to meet Elmo.  We unfortunately just missed Bert & Ernie…I think I might have posed with them if they had been there.  Maria was her typical shy self…but since leaving the park, she’s talked about seeing him.  Too funny.

p587169265-4[1]

Instead of buying the ridiculous prints that they sell you, we went to the main photo booth and bought the digital copies on a CD…that way we can print to our hearts content and share online here.  While waiting for the CD to burn we ran into Shamu walking around…you can’t tell from the image, below, but Maria was pretty excited to see him and, like Elmo, has been talking about him ever since.

p611973598-3[1]

After SeaWorld, we went back to the hotel for nap time…again, Maria has been amazing at pushing her nap time back on this trip…it’s made it a lot easier to not have to worry about an 11:30 nap while out exploring.  The downside is that she’s been taking LONG naps…3 hours today…which sorta killed off our evening.  So we made it a chill night…some burritos and a Coke from a bottle from a place we found on Yelp….took our food to a park in La Jolla overlooking the ocean and the setting sun…very nice.

I don’t know how it happened…but tomorrow is our last full day of vacation.  The weather is supposed to be nice so we have a beach day at Mission Beach planned followed by an afternoon in Balboa Park or at the Wild Animal Park…we’ll see how we’re doing.  Until later…

California Adventure

Having a great time on our California Adventure.  The first leg; Los Angeles, is behind us.  We had a great time staying with the Kolchins family who were our gracious hosts.  It was wonderful getting the opportunity to catch up with them and to let our kiddos play together.  Cannot wait for this summer for them to get the opportunity to run around together in Sandpoint when we all get together again.

The first night was a casual night at the house some fish tacos by chef David, delicious.  On Sunday I was able to make my long awaited pilgrimage to one of the largest photography stores on the west coast; Samy’s.  It was literally 4 times larger then Glaziers, the largest shop in Seattle…pretty impressive.  (Now I just need to make it to NYC for B&H…oh momma!)  Afterward…David, Alex and I met up with the ladies at the Grove for dinner.  LA has THE BEST people watching…just things you’d never see most other places…it’s great!

Monday was a work day for David and Tiffany, so Sarah, Maria and I packed up and headed to the beach.  Santa Monica pier…then time in the sand…walking along 3rd Street…lunch…then a perfectly timed nap while driving home.  In the evening we participated in Passover with David’s family…this was a unique experience…it’s always wonderful and interesting to see how other cultures observer their special days.  It was nothing like I expected…there was definitely a plan to the madness…but with lots of interaction with the group and quite a bit of sarcastic banter from group, it was unlike any religious experience of my life.  As a Catholic, we are all about repetition and procedure…and you don’t mess with either.  No joking around, just get it done.  That was not the case here.  Two hours later we were done with the readings, songs, questions and other ceremonial elements and it was time to eat…unfortunately those 2 hours were just too much for our little one so we had to depart before dinner.  Sorta awkward to crash David’s uncle’s Passover dinner and then to leave without eating…but our baby was exhausted (8:00 when we left).  A quick stop by Ralph’s got us a few items for dinner and we headed home to get Maria to sleep and to bake up our frozen pizza and prep our fruits.

p680934780-3[1]

Speaking of fruit…what a magical place California is for produce.  $0.88 for a pound of strawberries?  And the Champaign Mangos….oh momma…I’m hooked and can’t stop eating them!  David also made the most amazing guacamole for us with tree ripened avocados…wow.

On Tuesday we departed for San Diego.  On the drive down we had the opportunity to visit Sarah’s cousin, Thomas, at his new beach front condo.  WOW…what a place…not 30 feet from the beach…4 blocks from some local bars and restaurants.  Not bad.  Maria really put on a show for him, she was in great spirits…he seemed quite taken by her.  The rest of the drive to San Diego was pretty nice…beautiful views of the ocean…just amazing.  Maria again timed her nap nicely so that she woke up after I had checked into the hotel.  After settling in our room, we headed to the beach.  Armed with more mango we decided to take a leisurely beach walk in Torrey Pines Beach Park.  Afterward we found this random Teriyaki joint (which was NASTY) for dinner…picked up some groceries from Whole Foods and headed home to the hotel.

p168613848-4[1]

Today was Zoo day…I think Sarah’s been looking forward to today more then any other day of our trip.  We got to the zoo just after it opened (9:15).  It was great timing as the park was pretty empty when we got there…and was definitely starting to feel “full” by the time we left.  The San Diego Zoo is definitely impressive…but it also helped me to appreciate our Woodland Park Zoo even more.  While the San Diego zoo might have more (quantity & types) animals…most of them were in older style cages, where the Woodland Park Zoo focuses on trying to create habitats for the animals to roam around in.  Now…with the cages, you definitely know that the animals will be right there in viewing range…but it just doesn’t seem nice.  With all that said…we had a great time checking out the Pandas, Elephants (Maria’s favorite), Polar Bears, Hippos, etc.  After the zoo, In-n-Out Burger for lunch.  I’ve had In-n-Out before…but I had forgotten how good it is….good fries, fresh lettuce, plenty of pickles, a nicely toasted bun…heck, I even ate the tomato.  Might give Dick’s Drive-In a run for it’s money if In-n-Out came to Seattle.  Afterward, a short drive to the hotel where Maria took her nap (she’s been AMAZING about being flexible with her nap schedule on this trip!).  After waking up, we freshened up and went to check out Old Town.  My only memory of Old Town when I was here last was of my mother drinking this monster margarita and being very giggly afterward, probably the first and only time I’ve seen her truly drunk.  So of course I had to have one with my dinner….they did have an “El Jeffe” version that was 56oz, I just couldn’t do that…so I had a large in her honor.  It was probably one of the best restaurant experiences we’ve had since Maria was born; there were lots of kids that Maria enjoyed watching, a mariachi band and then there was this cute older couple that talked with Maria.  No chasing her around the restaurant or anything…almost like “normal” people.

p578280229-3[1]

So we’re now back in the hotel, tired after a long day.  Tomorrow is Sea World (if it doesn’t rain)!  I’ve done some photo culling and editing on the road…they’re uploading as we speak.  The internet connection in the hotel is a bit slow…they’ve been uploading since 3:00 this afternoon (it’s 9:30 now).

Missing our fur-child Lucy…and the rest of our friends and family.

An afternoon with Daddy

Sarah was FINALLY able to schedule some time with Shannon…which means that Daddy and Maria got to have an afternoon together.  It was a great time.  We went to the park and played on the swing and slide…then we went to the Edmonds waterfront and watched the ferry and other boats (Maria LOVES boats)…we even got a quick errand in for Dad, a trip to the camera store.  After our travels around town, we came home and ate some homemade pot stickers and fried rice while watching the Huskies beat New Mexico in the NCAA Tournament.  As Maria says, “GO DAWGS!!!”

Sunny Day!

Last night, the weather was gorgeous.  Broke out the camera…took a few pictures.  Hoping to do some more today.

Maria can now navigate the patio in "Beep-Beep" all by her self!

And today, it’s supposed to get to…SIXTY EIGHT!!!  Whaaa?  Happy sunny day to all!!!
